NEARLY 200 girls took part in the Devon under-15 and under-18 trials and development day on Sunday at Bicton College.
Each year the numbers of players hoping for county selection goes up.
The under-15 trials took place in the morning and saw 115 players from 11 clubs and more than 20 schools take part in carousel based activities in different skills areas before playing a number of 15-a-side matches.
Devon coach Hammy Kerswill said: “The carousels were led by volunteer club coaches and without them the day would not have gone ahead.
“Each year the standard improves and gives the selectors a huge headache in trying to narrow the squad down to around 28-30 girls.
“What is particularly promising is seeing trial numbers increase each year. We have gone from 65 to 79 to 115 in the last three years alone at under-15 level.
“This has also seen more clubs represented on the day and even more schools.
“The girls progressing to the next and final trial at North Tawton RFC on February 17 will hear within the next couple days.
“With the standard being so high it has not been an easy job but we urge players to keep playing rugby for their schools and clubs and to not be too disappointed if they don’t get in this time. The standard and participation of girls in the South West, particularly Devon, is up there with the best in the country.”
The under-18 trials were held in the afternoon and followed a similar fashion to the under-15s and were also well attended. They will also name a squad to attend final trials at North Tawton on February 17.
“It was particularly promising was seeing the number of U15s stepping up to trial from last year’s county squad and a host of new players attending the day,” said Kerswill.
“It is different to boys’ rugby with players having to step up from 15s to 18s directly with no individual years in between.”
Kerswill added: “A huge thanks to all coaches, selectors, parents and players who were involved in the day and to Bicton College for their excellent hospitality.”
