Deaf Rugby
Devon Deaf was established in the autumn of 2024 in response to a gap in playing opportunities for the deaf community.
With a firm understanding that sport is for all and any disability should not stop anyone from playing the sport they love. From a first training session with 7 players in attendance to now having an active group of 47 across both men’s and women’s sides.
The running of these sides has seen Devon being the first County to offer a side for deaf and hard of hearing players to play in a safe and understanding environment with their peers. And such has been the response that several players have now gone on to achieve international honours playing for both England Deaf and Wales Deaf.
The teams have enjoyed games against local Devon sides as well as the opportunity to train with England Deaf Rugby and play a game against Wales Deaf Rugby. With more exciting opportunities to come.
Devon deaf is at the forefront of growing the Deaf Rugby community by encouraging other Counties to start deaf sides, with success, and by pushing for games at all levels.
To qualify for Devon deaf you would require a hearing loss of 25dB bilaterally. We would ask to see an audiology report. Both Devon Deaf sides are supported by BSL signers who sign to a high standard, coaches and pitch side physios.
