Honiton are one game away from Twickenham after beating Chesham

HONITON find themselves just one game away from Twickenham after beating Buckinghamshire side Chesham 24-12 in the South West Divisional Senior Vase final on Saturday.

They will now play Portsmouth in the national semi-finals with the winners securing at spot at Twickenham.

Cornwall/Devon League high-flyers Honiton took a coach load of supporters to Chesham, with the players travelling up the night before.

Honiton made a great start and took the lead after just five minutes when their forwards crashed over from a catch-and-drive move.

The visitors increased that advantage to 8-0 on nine minutes when Tom Steer kicked a penalty.

It got better for Honiton when Steer added another penalty after an early good break by Jake Smith.

The Devon club were dominating possession and territory and Chesham had a man sin-binned, but Honiton could not add to the tally before half-time.

However, they did go 14-0 up early in the second period when Steer slotted over another penalty, this time from 40 metres out.

The home side did get back into the tie when Honiton’s Josh Rice was sin-binned and Chesham scored twice while he was off the field to close the score to 14-12.

Almost immediately after Honiton returned to 15 men they were awarded a penalty and Steer kicked it over to give them a five-point cushion.

Both sides had chances before Honiton wrapped up the game when Ben Small touched down for a converted try after he won the race to a kick forward.
