The Tamar Cup, an annual rugby fixture between Cornwall and Devon, has a rich history dating back to 1982. It was the brainchild of the then Chief Constable of Devon & Cornwall Police, David East. The inaugural match took place on September 21, 1982, in Plymouth, where Cornwall emerged victorious with a score of 25-6.

The teams that day featured some legendary players:

  • Cornwall: P.J. Winnan, B. Trevaskis, R. Pellow, I Perkins, G. Champion, N. Thomson, N. Coombes, S. Paice, M. Duffelen, R. Keast, J. Durant, R. Corin, P. Hendy, C. Bevan, A. Robson.
  • Devon: F. Wilson, N. Bagge, I. Vinter, S. Donovan, R. Westlake, S. Hogg, J. Mears, W. Davies, B. Priday, T. Harris, S. Stevens, T. Chapman, S. Deacey, G. Bess, M. Cathery.

Over the years, the Tamar Cup has seen intense battles between the two counties. Cornwall has secured twenty victories, while Devon has twelve wins, with two drawn games. St. Piran has led Cornwall to a remarkable streak of nine consecutive victories. Interestingly, the last Devon win occurred thirteen years ago, almost to the day, so perhaps it’s time for the Cup to venture east of the Tamar.

These matches, regardless of the level, epitomize the competitive and traditional spirit of rugby. Representative rugby at the county level remains an integral part of our sport, and the Tamar Cup plays a crucial role in preserving this tradition.

Games between the two counties have always been fiercely competitive, played in the true spirit of rugby. Today’s encounter in the Tamar Cup promises to be no different. Representative rugby at the county level holds a special place in the RFU playing calendar, and the Tamar Cup games play a vital role in preserving this tradition.

We extend our gratitude to Ivybridge RFC for hosting this evening’s match. Thanks to the players and committees of both counties for dedicating their time to this midweek game. The coaches and administrative staff deserve recognition for their tireless efforts in ensuring these games take place.

As we eagerly anticipate a competitive and entertaining match, perhaps Devon can follow the example set by the victorious Under 20s at Camborne a couple of weeks ago and prevent our visitors from securing their tenth consecutive win!
