Devon U16 Girls Shine at Player Development Group Assessment
The future of girls’ rugby in Devon looks brighter than ever following the U16s Player Development Group (PDG) assessment, held at Okehampton College on Sunday 21st October. Taking place just a day after England’s women secured their place in the World Cup Final, the event was a fitting celebration of the next generation of female rugby talent.
A total of 103 players aged 14–16 attended, representing clubs from across the county. Supported by a team of 20 volunteer coaches, the standard of play was outstanding, with a particularly consistent level of skill and determination shown across all positions.
One of the most encouraging aspects of the day was the performance of the younger Year 10 players, who competed with the same confidence, skill and physicality as their more experienced Year 11 teammates. This bodes extremely well for the future of the girls’ game in Devon.
From the assessment, 41 players from 12 different clubs were selected to join the 19 already in the programme after being successful at last seasons event. Those chosen can now look forward to a season-long development programme, including four competitive fixtures, to help them consolidate and apply the skills developed both at PDG sessions and within their clubs.
A huge thank you goes out to the coaches, parents and volunteers who made the day possible, giving these young athletes the opportunity to test themselves in a challenging yet supportive environment. Their commitment ensures that girls’ rugby in Devon continues to grow, offering pathways for players to reach their full potential.
With talent, enthusiasm and dedication like this, the future of women’s rugby in the County is in safe hands.
