Devon Edge Cornwall in Thrilling Tamar Cup Encounter

Devon RFU claimed a hard-fought 26–20 victory over Cornwall in this year’s Tamar Cup, delivering an entertaining and closely contested match in front of a large and passionate crowd at Brickfields.

With both sides backed by strong travelling support, the atmosphere reflected everything that makes this fixture so special - pride, rivalry, and a shared love of the game. From the first whistle, it was clear that this would be a competitive encounter, with both teams showcasing pace, physicality, and attacking intent.

Devon struck through tries from Tom Davies, Jamie Hext, Mitch Pinkus, and Charlie Groves, with Pinkus adding three conversions to keep the scoreboard ticking over. Cornwall responded with determination throughout, with Ollie Bebbington crossing twice and James Tucker adding a try, conversion, and penalty to keep the visitors firmly in contention.

The match remained tight throughout, with Cornwall applying pressure in key moments, but Devon’s composure and ability to capitalise on scoring opportunities ultimately proved decisive.

A Rivalry Still in the Balance

This result adds another chapter to this season’s Devon vs Cornwall story - one that now heads towards a fitting finale.

Cornwall struck first earlier in the campaign with a 46–20 victory over Devon in the Jason Leonard Under 20s competition, before Devon responded with this Tamar Cup win to level the contest across the senior game.

With one win apiece, attention now turns to the deciding fixture. Devon Women will face Cornwall Women in the Gill Burns Cup at North Tawton on Sunday 24th May, with the opportunity to claim the unofficial title across this season’s inter-county clashes.

A Showcase of South West Rugby

This year’s Tamar Cup once again lived up to its reputation as one of the standout fixtures in the South West rugby calendar - a fantastic showcase of the quality, competitiveness, and spirit of both counties.

Devon RFU would like to thank all supporters who attended and contributed to such a memorable occasion, as well as Cornwall RFU for another fiercely contested and respectful encounter.
