Safeguarding

We are committed to safeguarding the welfare of everyone involved in our sport, from children to vulnerable adults; it is at the heart of everything we do.

Safeguarding in rugby means taking proactive steps to protect individuals from harm, abuse, and neglect. It encompasses child protection, ensuring the welfare of vulnerable adults, and fostering a culture of awareness and accountability. Whether on the pitch, in training sessions, or within the wider rugby community, safeguarding is a shared responsibility.

The RFU safeguarding team

The RFU have a dedicated team to support you with safeguarding concerns. Please use the following form to contact them if you have a concern:

However, if someone is in immediate danger call 999 as soon as possible and then submit the above form.

If you want to talk to the RFU before submitting the form please email them at: safeguarding@rfu.com or call their unmanned Safeguarding line on 0208 831 6655 and a member of their team will respond to you within 24 working hours.

In addition to Devon’s Safeguarding Manager and the RFU Team, your club will also have a Safeguarding Officer. Their details will be in the clubhouse or on their website.

Receiving concerns

When someone shares a concern with you, whether this is about something that has happened to them or someone else, it is important to:

  • Stay calm, but don’t delay.
  • Keep questions to a minimum and try not to interrupt the child or adult.
  • If a child or adult at risk has disclosed to you directly, re-assure them that they are not to blame.
  • Do not make any promises of confidentiality or outcome. It is almost certain that you will have to share this information with someone.
  • Make brief notes, as accurately as you can, at the earliest opportunity.
