Girls’ Rugby in Devon: Growing Stronger Together
Female rugby continues to thrive in Devon, with a fantastic network of clubs, a well-structured fixtures calendar, and a dedicated support team providing guidance and assistance to girls’ rugby sections across the county.
Our Mission
We are committed to building a sustainable and progressive structure for girls’ rugby, ensuring continued development and playing opportunities at all levels. Our key objectives include:
- Expanding the Game – Supporting the formation of new girls’ teams and helping existing clubs grow through player recruitment, retention, and funding opportunities.
- Enhancing Competition – Providing a clear and inclusive calendar of fixtures and playing opportunities tailored to all team sizes.
- Creating a Support Network – Offering regular points of contact for club managers and coaches to share feedback, seek guidance, and collaborate.
How it works
Devon currently boasts 27 active clubs with girls’ sections across U12s, U14s, U16s, and U18s. Girls of primary age (U11s) typically play alongside boys, although Year 6 girls may be eligible to play exclusively in the U12s all-girls teams if you speak to the coach.
Fixtures are organised before the season begins. Each age group has a slightly different format with our first league being created in the U16s. Alongside standard 1v1 fixtures, we run “Cluster Games”, primarily for U12s but available to all age groups. These flexible events allow clubs with smaller numbers to join forces and compete in various game formats, such as 10s, 12s, 15s or half-pitch matches.
This dynamic approach ensures that every club in Devon has the opportunity to take part – whether through traditional 1v1 fixtures or by joining cluster events. Our aim is to maintain consistent playing opportunities, balanced competition, and an outstanding player experience for all involved.
