Devon Referees

Without them, we would have no game!
Our game wouldn’t function without its referees. These volunteers are more than just whistle-blowers — they are guardians of the game, ensuring fairness, safety, and respect on the field. Every try, tackle, and turnover depends on their judgment, positioning, and calm authority under pressure.
Referees help bring the spirit of rugby to life. They uphold the values of discipline, integrity, and sportsmanship, fostering an environment where players can compete safely and fairly. With every match, referees play a crucial role in developing the game, from grassroots youth fixtures to elite competitions.
Refereeing is flexible, too. You can choose how much time you commit, the level you officiate at, and how far you want to progress. Some do it for fun and fitness on the weekends; others go on to officiate county, national, or even international matches. The pathway is there — and it all starts with giving it a go.
Young Match Officials
For young people aged 14 and up, the RFU’s Young Match Official (YMO) scheme is a brilliant way to get started. Designed to support and develop the next generation of referees, the YMO pathway offers training, mentorship, and real match experience in a safe and supportive environment. It’s a great way to build confidence, meet new people, and be an important part of the rugby family — all while learning valuable skills for life.
