Inclusive Rugby

At Devon RFU, we are committed to making rugby a welcoming and accessible sport for everyone. Through our Inclusion and Diversity (I&D) efforts, we work closely with the Rugby Football Union (RFU) to ensure that everyone who wants to play rugby can do so, regardless of background, ability, or identity.
One of the key parts of this commitment is supporting inclusive clubs like the Plymouth Dolphins, one of Devon’s inclusive rugby teams. These clubs are open to all players and pride themselves on fostering a friendly, team-oriented environment where everyone is welcome.
We all share the responsibility to ensure that the game we love is welcoming and accessible to everyone. To support this, the RFU has established a network of Inclusion and Diversity Officers who work with clubs of all sizes to promote accessibility and inclusivity throughout the sport.
Rugby is a game built on pride, where teammates become like a second family. Players come from diverse backgrounds, cultures, races, sexualities, abilities, and genders, all united by their passion for the sport.
Inclusion and diversity are central to rugby’s core values: Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline, and Sportsmanship. By welcoming and including all members, we strengthen our teams and enrich our experiences. Rugby is a game of selflessness - we play for the team, not just for ourselves. Mutual respect is the foundation of the sport, and by honouring its values and traditions, we earn the respect of others through our actions.
The Equality Act 2010 provides a legal framework to prevent discrimination based on nine protected characteristics. To support clubs in understanding and implementing inclusive practices, the RFU has developed an Inclusion and Diversity Toolkit, which you can explore here:
